The City of Martinsburg bids farewell to retiring Police Chief George Swartwood and congratulations to incoming Police Chief Erin Gibbons.

Chief Swartwood announced his retirement, effective June 9, 2023, following 39+ years of service to the City of Martinsburg. He was honored by a Resolution of Accomplishment from the Mayor and Council at the June 8 Regular Meeting.

On the morning of June 9, the City of Martinsburg announced that, effective June 11, 2023 Deputy Chief Erin Gibbons will step into the role of Chief. After much consideration, it was determined that the 17 year veteran of the Police Department will serve the City well in his new role. Chief Gibbons has demonstrated his ability to lead the department into the 21st century and has a thorough understanding of issues and challenges facing modern policing, generally, and in the City of Martinsburg, specifically.  We believe he will be an asset to the men and women of the Police Department and the City of Martinsburg community as a whole.

Join us in congratulating Chief Gibbons!
