Berkeley County Schools held a ceremony at Musselman High School to announce the 2025 Teacher of the Year, Service Person of the Year, and New Teacher of the Year. The event celebrated educators with a “Rockstars” theme, highlighting their commitment to education. Finalists received $500, while winners were awarded $1,000.
Curtis Hite was named Service Person of the Year after 37 years with Berkeley County Schools. Hite began his career in 1980 at North Middle School before serving in the Navy. He returned to work with students, noting how simple interactions have impacted them. “It’s a great honor,” Hite said. “I think about all the kids I’ve impacted over the years.”
Lakyn Byers, a second-grade teacher at Berkeley Heights Elementary, was recognized as New Teacher of the Year. Initially pursuing another degree, Byers found her passion for teaching as a substitute teacher. “My heart truly goes out to these kids,” Byers said. “I want to be a rock in their life; someone they can depend on.”
Emily McDonald, a sixth-grade science teacher at Hedgesville Middle School, was named Teacher of the Year. McDonald’s journey into teaching began in childhood and included 15 years of teaching gymnastics. Her motivation is her daughter’s education. “I want her to be the best she can be,” McDonald said.
McDonald and Hite will represent Berkeley County in the West Virginia Teacher and Service Person of the Year program.
