Martinsburg High School, as part of the Martinsburg Health and Wellness Initiative, is developing a wellness space and fitness trail to encourage healthy living among its students. This initiative is a collaborative effort between students and teachers aimed at enhancing both physical and mental well-being.
Social studies teacher Derek Gallagher identified challenges in students’ ability to retain information and their reliance on technology, which often impacts their mental health. To address this, Gallagher launched the Martinsburg Health and Wellness Initiative. “We are doing a real disservice to our students,” Gallagher noted. “They spend the whole day inside, on their devices, and then we wonder why they aren’t feeling well.”
The wellness space includes 25 raised beds for growing various plants and outdoor workout equipment like pull-up bars and kettlebells. Students engage in physical activities such as competitive movement challenges, with rewards like field trips and tie dye projects.
The project also involves creating a fitness trail named after guidance counselor Les Smith. This trail will feature fitness obstacles and be open to the community. Gallagher has witnessed positive outcomes, noting, “I think these kids are awesome. They deserve an environment that fosters health and wellness and not disease.”
To fund the trail, the initiative is raising $15,000, including an upcoming Student vs. Faculty Basketball Fundraiser on May 14.
