Orchard View Intermediate School has been selected as one of the 220 schools across 38 states to receive a $5,000 grant from the Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries. This year, the foundation awarded over $1 million in grants aimed at updating and diversifying library collections.
Laura Bush expressed enthusiasm about the initiative, stating, “Books have the power to spark curiosity and inspire lifelong learning. We are thrilled to provide these grants so that librarians can refresh their shelves — opening the door for students to discover new interests and endless adventures.”
The announcement coincided with the annual Laura Bush Book Club event, part of Engage at the Bush Center series presented by NexPoint. During this event, Mrs. Bush’s 2025 summer reading list was unveiled, offering recommendations for young readers up to middle schoolers.
“Reading helps children connect with the world around them,” said Mrs. Bush. “This year’s summer reading list celebrates America, everyday adventures, and friendships that stand the test of time. I hope families will take time to enjoy the slower pace of summer and enjoy reading these stories together.”
Among the 16 books on this year’s list are “I Loved You First” by Jenna Bush Hager and Barbara Pierce Bush, as well as “First Ladies Make History” by Anita McBride and Giovanna McBride. Inspired by the foundation’s mission, Anita McBride and her daughter will donate a copy of their book to every elementary school that has received a grant since 2002.
The next round of applications for library grants for the 2025-2026 school year will open later in 2025. More information is available at bushcenter.org/laurabushfoundation.
