The Shepherd University School of Music will host a free Visitation Day on Monday, October 10, open to all high school seniors and juniors and transfer students interested in pursuing a degree in music at Shepherd. The day runs from 7:45 a.m.-3 p.m.
While on campus, students will attend classes, meet music faculty and current students, visit with representatives from the Office of Admissions, hear ensemble rehearsals and performances, have lunch in the Ram’s Den, and take a guided campus tour. The day offers an opportunity to live a “day in the life” of a Shepherd music student and learn about the audition and application process. Parents are also welcome to accompany their students.
Shepherd offers three music degrees: a Bachelor of Music (B.M.) in performance, a Bachelor of Music Education (B.M.E.), and a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in music. The School of Music’s mission is to challenge students to reach their potential by providing extraordinary experiences. Music majors have many performance opportunities, including four choirs, wind ensemble, wind symphony, orchestra, chamber groups, two jazz bands, an opera, and a marching band.
Shepherd University School of Music was ranked in the Top 100 Best Schools for Music Majors by Great Value Colleges in 2020 and offers competitive tuition costs for both in-state and out-of-state students.
There are opportunities for music students to study with some of the region’s most experienced performers and educators. Master classes are regularly offered with nationally acclaimed guest artists. The Jazz Ensemble, Wind Ensemble, and Concert and Chamber choirs have performed throughout the United States and Europe.
Many Shepherd music graduates have gone on to prestigious graduate schools of music, including Peabody Institute, Northwestern University, Ithaca College, Eastman School of Music, Arizona State University, and Manhattan School of Music. Graduates have starred on Broadway, performed on world tours, become recording artists, and have joined nationally known ensembles, including the United States Navy Band and The Navy Band Sea Chanters.
The music education program has a 100 percent placement rate of those actively seeking jobs in the teaching field since its inception in 1950, and music education students learn to conduct by directing ensembles in real concerts, not lab ensembles in student recitals. Shepherd music graduates hold esteemed teaching positions in institutions of learning all over the country, including elementary, secondary, and post-secondary schools.
Auditions for admission and scholarships will take place on Saturday, January 28, and Saturday, February 25, 2023.
