Concord Controls Notre Dame in 85-80 Win

The Concord University men's basketball tea led for over 38 minutes as it held off Notre Dame for an 85-80 win Saturday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference game inside the Carter Center.

CU (5-3, 2-2 MEC) opened the game with 12 straight points over the first 2:34 of the contest. Senior forward Jevon Laidler did half the scoring as he knocked in a three-pointer and also converted an old-school three-point play.

Notre Dame (3-4, 2-2 MEC) chipped away at the deficit as it went on a 17-7 run to get within two of Concord, 19-17. The Falcons hung around for the remainder of the first half, and even tied the game at 33 with 3:55 remaining in the opening half.

CU scored the next six points, with fifth-year senior forward Da'Vion Moore accounting for two buckets, and led 39-37 at halftime.

The Mountain Lions restored a comfortable nine-point edge, 46-37, two minutes into the second half. But again, Notre Dame did not go away as it stayed within six points of Concord until a three-point play from junior guard Jordan Wooden was followed by a driving layup from Laidler at the 9:11 mark—pushing Concord in front 65-54.

For the final nine minutes of the game, Concord led by at least five points.
Concord put five players into double figures, led by 17 points from Laidler in just 20 minutes of action as he battled first-half trouble. Laidler was 7-for-11 from the floor. Senior guard Ethan Heller, Moore and graduate guard Lual Daniel Rahama all had 13 points. Rahama added nine rebounds. Heller tossed in five boards and five assists with just one turnover.

Wooden tallied 11 points.

The Mountain Lions had a 47-33 advantage in rebounding with 17 boards coming on the offensive glass.

CU concludes its homestand as it welcomes nationally-ranked Fairmont State to the Carter Center 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
