Sophomore guard Carson Poffenberger (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) scored a game and career-high 21 points to lead Shepherd (10-7, 7-4 PSAC) to a 69-64 win over Mansfield (4-11, 3-8 PSAC) in PSAC men's basketball action at Mansfield on Saturday.
Poffenberger connected on 8-of-15 field goals with a 2-of-5 effort from three-point range. He drained 3-of-3 free throws.
Junior guard Daniel McClain-Corley (Clinton, Md./Massanutten Military Academy) and senior guard Jon Preston (Brandywine, Md./Rock Creek Christian) each had 15 points. Preston hauled down a game-high seven rebounds.
Idris Ali led the Mounties with 17 points. Michael Dickson added 13 points and Saraj Ali tossed in seven.
Mansfield had a 33-27 lead at halftime.
Shepherd rallied from a seven-point second half deficit to take the lead for good at 49-46 after a three-pointer by Preston with 8:47 left.
Shepherd connected on 42.9 percent (24-56) of its field goals with a 38.5 percent (10-26) performance from three-point range. The Rams drained 68.8 percent (11-16) of their free throws.
Mansfield shot 44.6 percent (25-56) from the floor with a 27.3 percent (6-22) effort from beyond the arc. The Mounties hit on 66.7 percent (8-12) of their free throws.
Rebounding was even at 33-all. The Rams forced seven turnovers and committed seven.
The Rams return to action on Monday when they travel to West Chester for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
