Dr. Mary J.C. Hendrix Shepherd University’s President | Shepherd University
When Dr. Stephen Spencer joined Shepherd University as the provost and vice president for academic affairs in 2022, he repeatedly called it his “dream job.” He quickly made an impact on the University and the community, making friends, joining Rotary, and setting in motion a vision for Shepherd’s future. Spencer’s leadership and vision will carry on through the Spencer Family “Dream Job” Scholarship.
Funded by Spencer’s friends, neighbors, and family, this scholarship will support Shepherd students who have a vision of their dream job following graduation. To honor Spencer’s love of literature and passion for poetry, candidates for the Spencer Family “Dream Job” Scholarship will submit both an essay and a poem portraying their vision of their dream job. Through this generous award, Spencer’s passion for education and leadership at Shepherd will continue to support generations of future students.
Spencer earned his Ph.D. in modern American literature and multi-ethnic literature of the United States from the University of Cincinnati and an M.A. in English and B.A. in English with a minor in history from the University of Dayton. Prior to joining Shepherd’s leadership team, he served as a faculty member and administrator at Wilmington College of Ohio, the University of Southern Indiana, and Athens State University. He was a Senior Fulbright Scholar in American Studies, studying at Universidad Complutense Madrid.
