Shepherd University Athletics: Shepherd Softball Rallies in Nightcap to Gain Split with Shippensburg

Shepherd University (17-9, 2-6 PSAC East) split a doubleheader with Shippensburg (10-7, 4-2 PSAC East) in PSAC East softball action at Shippensburg on Tuesday. Shippensburg gained a 3-2 win in game one, while Shepherd scored seven runs over the final two innings in the nightcap to rally for a 9-7 triumph. 

Shepherd took a 2-0 lead in the first inning in the nightcap on a homer by graduate student third baseman Nicole Purtell (Centreville, Va./Centreville) and an RBI-single off the bat of junior second baseman Caitlin Donnelly (Newark, Del./Padua Academy). 

Shippensburg got a two-run homer by Hannah Marsteller in the bottom of the first to tie the game at 2-all. 

The Raiders took a 3-2 lead in the second as Emilee Sullivan singled and later scored on an error. 

After the Raiders added two in the third, Marsteller hit a two-run blast in the fourth to up the lead to 7-2. 

Junior outfielder Isabella Forte (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville) hit an RBI-double and Purtell added a two-run single in the sixth as Shepherd cut the lead to 7-5. 

The Rams tacked on four runs in the seventh to gain the win. Senior catcher Alex Mantz (Edinburg, Va./Central) ripped a two-run double to key the rally. 

Donnelly went 3-for-3 and Purtell went 3-for-5 to lead the Rams. 

Graduate student pitcher Sarah Lamper  (Marshall, Va./Fauquier) (4.0 IP, 5 H, 2ER, 5 K, 1 BB) (2-1) gained the win. Hannah Phillips (0.2 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 0 K, 1 BB) (1-1) took the loss. 

Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first inning in game one as Purtell singled and later scored on a double by senior outfielder Hannah Beeler (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim). 

Shippensburg took a 2-1 lead in the third on a two-run single by Myers. 

Shepherd tied the game in the fifth as senior outfielder Kylie Condon (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) singled and later scored on an infield single by Donnelly. 

Shippensburg scored the game-winner in the seventh on an RBI-single by Katelyn Minney. 

Donnelly went 3-for-3 to lead the Rams.                

Emma Flattery (2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 K, 0 BB) (4-1) gained the win. Senior pitcher Katie Laing (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) (6.0 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 3 K, 5 BB) (6-4) took the loss.
