Martinsburg North Middle School is taking part in the Angel Tree program to assist families in need during the Christmas season. The initiative allows people to donate clothing and toys, ensuring everyone can enjoy a special holiday.
Krista Kyker, a social studies teacher at the school, is leading the project this year with support from other staff members. Although North Middle has participated in the Angel Tree program for five years, Kyker decided to continue it after learning no one was heading up the effort this year. She emphasized the community's needs: "There is such a high need in our community," Kyker said. "Students are always coming in freezing because they don’t have a coat."
The school aims to support 34 families by providing clothes, bedding, toys, and other necessities along with a Christmas meal. Local businesses have contributed as well; Family Bible Church donated $1,000 while Pyramid Health gave $500 along with sleeping bags and other items. Community members also adopted families or contributed funds, resulting in over $4,000 collected for those in need.
Students at North Middle are actively participating by wrapping presents through their Student Council and Renaissance Program memberships. "We can only wrap presents after school hours," Kyker noted about their involvement.
Teachers are organizing family lists and managing finances while maintaining confidentiality to ensure comfort for those seeking help. Kyker expressed gratitude for community support: "The community involvement has really inspired me," she said.
With four families still available for adoption, Kyker hopes any extra donations will aid additional families not yet included in the program. Donations are due by December 10th, and further details can be found on Martinsburg North Middle School's website.
