In its 40th year of recognizing top high school athletes, Gatorade has named Koi Fagan from Martinsburg High School as the 2024-25 Gatorade West Virginia Football Player of the Year. Fagan is the seventh student from Martinsburg High School to receive this honor.
The Gatorade Player of the Year award highlights outstanding high school athletes for their achievements on the field, in academics, and within their communities. This accolade places Fagan among notable alumni such as Emmitt Smith, Peyton Manning, and DJ Lagway.
During his senior season, Fagan led his team to a 12-0 record and into the Class AAAA semifinals. The quarterback threw for 1,985 yards with 28 touchdowns and only three interceptions while completing 64.5% of his passes. Additionally, he rushed for 1,196 yards and scored 21 touchdowns.
Fagan is not only recognized for his athletic skills but also for his academic performance with a weighted GPA of 4.56. He holds leadership roles in various school organizations including Student Council Treasurer and participates in community service activities like mentoring at his school.
Martinsburg High School head coach Dave Walker praised Fagan saying, “In my 37 years as a head football coach, Koi is one of the best players I’ve ever been around.” Walker added that Fagan's character surpasses even his athletic abilities.
The Gatorade Player of the Year program selects winners from each state across multiple sports categories annually. The selection process involves input from coaches, scouts, media professionals among others to determine state winners.
Koi Fagan joins recent recipients Murphy Clement (2023-24), Judah Price (2022-23), Hudson Clement (2021-22), and Blake Hartman (2020-21) in receiving this prestigious award in West Virginia.
As part of its commitment to social impact through sports, Gatorade provides each Player of the Year with a grant to donate to a chosen social impact partner. To date, over $5.6 million has been distributed through these grants by more than 2,000 winners across various organizations.
