Potomack Intermediate School in Spring Mills has introduced River, a new therapy dog, to its students. The chocolate lab is intended to boost attendance and offer emotional support throughout the school day.
The decision to bring a therapy dog into the school was influenced by the positive impact observed at Spring Mills High School with their therapy dog, Jet. Principal Craig Arch and his staff decided to follow suit and began fundraising efforts to acquire their own therapy animal. They collaborated with Ultimate Canine, the organization responsible for training Jet, and were introduced to River.
River's training included instruction for five handlers at Potomack Intermediate, including Principal Arch. "She is impressively well-trained," Arch noted. He added that while River exhibits high energy when not working, she is expected to have a productive career at the school.
On Tuesday, River was officially introduced to students in an event held in the school's cafeteria. During this introduction, Arch explained rules for interacting with River while school counselor Alexandrea Hott walked her through the room for students to meet her.
Hott highlighted one of River's roles as encouraging student attendance by planning events like a birthday party on Christmas Eve. She shared an instance where River assisted a student who was reluctant to get off the bus. "Attendance can be tough," Hott said. "A dog is a great way to have that positive incentive."
In addition to attendance support, River will provide emotional breaks for students having difficult days by allowing them time with her before returning to class activities.
River's arrival has been met with enthusiasm from both staff and students at Potomack Intermediate School.
