Three fifth-grade students from Mill Creek Intermediate School have been recognized for their achievements in an American history essay contest. The event was organized by the Pack Horse Ford Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).

Participants were asked to imagine themselves as colonists in the 1770s and write about their reasons for joining a tea party protest against British taxes and laws.

Emily Hendrix, Gwyneth Switzer, and Marissa Ickes from Mill Creek secured first, second, and third places respectively in their grade level.

The first-place winner received $50, a certificate, and entry into the state competition. Second and third-place winners were awarded $25 and $20 respectively, along with certificates.

The winning essays have been forwarded to the state chairwoman for further judging. There is potential for these essays to progress to district, regional, and national levels.

A ceremony and reception are planned for 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 8, at the Shepherdstown train station to honor these students' accomplishments.
