The Shepherd University Wind Symphony will present “Maestros and Tartans” on Thursday, November 17, at 7:30 p.m. in the Frank Arts Center Theater. The concert will feature a variety of wind band literature as interpreted by a new generation of conductors and special guest artists, The City of Winchester Pipes and Drums.
The featured student conductors are Emily McMoran, Charles Town, West Virginia; Savannah Hodges, Leonardtown, Maryland; Natalie McGeachy, Winchester, Virginia; and Corwin Neat, Nottingham, Maryland. After completing two semesters of conducting classes, these students have carefully selected music, studied their scores, written program notes, developed rehearsal strategies, and rehearsed the ensemble in preparation for this concert.
Selections include “The Chimes of Liberty,” a classic march by Edwin Franko Goldman; “Choreography,” a rhythmic dance from Robert Sheldon; a reflective song titled “Afterlife” by Rossano Galante; “Aisling Gaelach,” an Irish fantasy by William Harbinson; an inspiring song of hope by Brian Balmages titled “Not Afraid to Dream”; and a powerful love ballad inspired by a video game by Julie Giroux titled “Riften Wed.”
The Shepherd University Wind Symphony, under the direction of Dr. Scott Hippensteel, will join forces with the City of Winchester Pipes and Drums to perform “When the Pipers Play,” “Procession of the Pipes,” and “Amazing Grace.” The City of Winchester Pipes and Drums will also perform a few other selections during the concert.
General admission for “Maestro and Tartans” is $15; $10 for Shepherd faculty, staff, and alumni, senior citizens, and students 18 and under; and free for Shepherd students with a valid Rambler ID.
