Approximately one-third of the national high scorers on the PSAT/NMSQT, are notified that they have qualified as semifinalists. To be considered for a National Merit Scholarship, semifinalists must advance to finalist standing in the competition by meeting high academic standards, as well as demonstrating community involvement, strong work ethic, and extracurricular pursuits. Additionally, the student must be recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT scores that align with the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test.
