Martinsburg High School's Renee Haines has been honored with the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST). This prestigious award acknowledges educators nationwide who are committed to shaping future generations and positively impacting their communities.
Haines, a dedicated biology teacher, chose her career path during college. Initially considering a lab career or medical school, she opted instead for teaching and earned a master's degree in education. She returned to Martinsburg High School, her alma mater, where she has taught for 17 years.
Her journey to receiving the PAEMST began with a nomination by former Superintendent Patrick Murphy in 2020. Though named a finalist in 2021, it took several years before the awardees were announced. Haines was officially recognized as a 2021 award winner this year.
Reflecting on the long wait, Haines said it might have been "the longest wait in PAEMST history." During this period, nominees frequently checked with each other for updates. "I was shocked to see that I was selected," she admitted. Despite reading impressive reports from fellow nominees, she doubted her chances of winning.
Upon receiving the notification email, Haines initially questioned its authenticity and consulted her husband for confirmation. After years of anticipation, she expressed gratitude for the recognition and continues to enjoy teaching biology to prepare students for their futures.
"Science explains how the world works, while anatomy explains how the body works," said Haines. Her goal is to equip students with foundational knowledge so they can make informed decisions about their health.
The application process involved writing reports and creating a teaching video featuring students who are now college seniors. Although contact with many of these students has faded over time, Haines appreciates their contribution and has received congratulations from numerous former pupils.
As an award recipient, Haines joins a network of teachers collaborating on new ideas and professional development opportunities previously unavailable to her. She extends special thanks to colleagues, family members who supported her journey, and her students.
