MARTINSBURG, W.Va – The well-known Vince Lombardi quote, "Leaders aren’t born. They’re made," is often repeated. However, Max Anderson, a high school quarterback at Spring Mills in West Virginia, seems to challenge this notion.

Anderson is recognized for his leadership both on and off the field. As a quarterback, he leads an undefeated team with aspirations of achieving new heights for their school. Off the field, he serves as a role model and mentor to younger students.

Anderson acknowledges the impact he has on aspiring athletes: “I’m sure they look up to us. They wish they could be in our position so I really try to give back as much as possible and give them a little role model,” he said.

Cardinal head coach Marcus Law highlights Anderson's influence: “I’ve never had a fan club at 17 and that’s what he truly does." Anderson's presence is felt even among elementary students during community engagements.

Grace Pavlik, a preschool teacher at Spring Mills High School, recounts an instance where Anderson assisted her class during a chaotic moment: “Max absolutely ran over... escorted us back to my room.” She describes him as becoming like a "big brother" to her students.

Anderson regularly interacts with Pavlik's class by reading stories and engaging with the children. Pavlik notes that these interactions are enjoyable for both Anderson and the students: “I feel like when he comes in my room he gets to just be free."

The leadership qualities exhibited by Anderson are influenced by his family background. He looks up to his uncle Josh Francis and father Dax for inspiration and guidance.

His younger brother Xavier also admires him: “Even in basketball, he taught me how to get better at things.”

Anderson's influence extends beyond his immediate family. Coach Law observes that his own sons look up to Anderson as well: “You want your kids to look up to the right role models and ultimately, Max is that kind of kid.”

For Anderson, being seen as a leader is rewarding: “It’s amazing... just being able to have that spotlight on you is a great look."

While it may not settle whether leaders are born or made, Max Anderson exemplifies qualities that make him stand out within his community.
